Herne Bay's Piers
Written by the late Harold Gough, this is an expanded edition of a book that has been out of print for some time. This revised version has been chosen as the inaugural title in a new series of books published in conjunction with the Herne Bay Historical Records Society on the Herne Bay area, and is seen as a fitting tribute to Harold who was an accomplished local historian.
The book explains the story of how the town of Herne Bay really owes its existence to the first pier, built in 1831. Each of the three piers in covered in some detail right through to the present day. A chapter has been added on the pier at Hampton point that was built as a landing stage for the ill fated Herne Bay oyster company. Extensively illustrated with period images.

Mills & Milling in the Herne Bay Area
Written by the late Harold Gough.
Windmills are an important part of our heritage and remain part of our lives today, often appearing as part of the rural landscape. There is evidence of milling activity in this part of East Kent, dating back over 1000 years and in the case of Herne, the windmill can still be seen standing proudly above the more modern development that surrounds it.
A background early history is included in this book along with more details of the rural windmills at Herne, Chislet and Hoath, as well as the mill that once stood on the seafront at Herne Bay. The text covers not just the mills, but it also includes details of the people who owned and operated these important aspects of our economic history. Numerous period images are included in the text.
